How to Read the Bible

Before asking, “What does this mean to me?” we first ask, “What did God mean through the author in context?”

Helpful questions:

Who wrote this?
Who was it written to?
What kind of writing is this?
What happened before and after this passage?
What does this reveal about God?
How does this connect to Jesus?
How should I respond?

Key Bible Study Words

Context — The surrounding verses, chapter, book, and historical setting that help explain the meaning.
Exegesis — Drawing the meaning out of the text.
Eisegesis — Reading our own ideas into the text.
Application — How God’s truth should shape our heart, thoughts, words, and actions.
